Predicting the odds of offspring traits using Punnett squares. You already know that genes come in versions called alleles, that some are dominant and some recessive, and that an organism’s genotype controls its phenotype. Now you’ll meet the tool that turns those rules into predictions — a simple grid that tells you the ODDS of what a cross will produce. It can’t tell you the future of one offspring, but it tells you the chances with real power.
You already know the pieces. Genes come in versions called alleles. A capital letter stands for a dominant allele, a lowercase letter for a recessive one. An organism with two of the same allele is homozygous (YY or yy); one with two different alleles is heterozygous (Yy). And the genotype — the actual allele pair — controls the phenotype, the trait you can see.
Here’s the question those rules can’t answer by themselves: if you cross two parents, what will their offspring be? A Punnett square answers it. It’s a simple grid that predicts the probability of each offspring genotype and phenotype. It doesn’t tell you exactly what the offspring WILL be — it gives you the odds, the way you can predict the odds of a coin flip without knowing the result of any single flip.
It’s named after Reginald Punnett, a British geneticist who invented it over a century ago to make Mendel’s pea-plant rules easy to use. Before the square, predicting a cross took careful reasoning. After it, anyone could draw a grid and read the answer. That’s why it’s still the first tool every genetics student learns.
In your last lesson you learned the vocabulary — alleles, dominant and recessive, genotype and phenotype, homozygous and heterozygous. Those were the rules of the game. The Punnett square is the TOOL that uses those rules to make predictions. Everything you learned about how traits are coded now becomes something you can calculate. Keep that vocabulary handy — you’ll use every word of it in this lesson.
