Pancakes from Scratch: A Fractions Recipe at Home

Pancakes are one of the first real recipes most kids can handle on their own — and every single ingredient involves a fraction or a measurement worth talking about. In this activity your child will read a recipe, find every fraction in it, measure carefully, and then scale the whole batch up and down. By the end, they will own a recipe they can make every weekend.

What you need

  • A set of measuring cups (1 cup, 3/4 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup)
  • A set of measuring spoons (1 tbsp, 1 tsp, 1/2 tsp)
  • A large mixing bowl and a whisk
  • A griddle or large nonstick pan
  • A spatula
  • A pencil and paper for writing out the scaled recipes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

The recipe

Part 1: Read the recipe and find the fractions

Before anyone touches a bowl, set the written recipe in front of your child. Ask them to circle or point to every fraction they can find. Can you find all the fractions in this recipe? How many are there?

Now pull out the measuring cups and spoons. Have your child match each fraction in the recipe to the right tool. Which cup do we need for 3/4 cup of milk? Which spoon do we need for 1/2 teaspoon of salt?

Once they have the right tools lined up, measure each ingredient together. When you get to the milk, pour 3/4 cup into the measuring cup, then pour 1/2 cup into the same measuring cup separately. Which is bigger, 3/4 or 1/2? How can you tell just by looking at the lines on the cup?

Part 2: Mix and cook together

Combine the dry ingredients in the bowl. Make a well in the center and add the egg, milk, and melted butter. Let your child whisk until just combined — a few lumps are fine.

Heat the griddle over medium heat and add a small pat of butter. Pour about 1/4 cup of batter for each pancake. When bubbles form on the surface and the edges look set, flip. How long did we wait before flipping? About 2 minutes? Let's time the next one and see.

Count the pancakes as they come off the griddle. How many pancakes did one batch of batter make? Let's write that number down.

Part 3: Double the recipe

Tell your child the scenario: We have guests coming for breakfast. We need to double the recipe. What does "double" mean?

Go through each ingredient one at a time. Write the new amounts on paper. Start with the easy ones — 1 cup of flour becomes 2 cups, 1 egg becomes 2 eggs. Then hit the fractions: What's 1/2 teaspoon times 2? What's 3/4 cup times 2?

For 3/4 cup times 2, let your child pour two separate 3/4 cups into the 1-cup measure. It overflowed! That means 3/4 plus 3/4 is more than 1 cup. How much more? Help them see that 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/4 = 1 and 1/2 cups.

Part 4: Halve the recipe

New scenario: You are just cooking for yourself. You only need half a batch. What's half of each ingredient?

Half of 1 cup is straightforward. Half of 1 tablespoon is trickier — grab the 1/2 tablespoon measuring spoon or talk about how 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons, so half is 1 and 1/2 teaspoons. Then the big one: What's half of 3/4 cup?

Let them think about it. If they are stuck, try pouring 3/4 cup of water and splitting it evenly between two cups. Measure what is in each cup. Half of 3/4 is 3/8. That's a new fraction!

Make it again

Make this a Saturday morning tradition. Each weekend, change the challenge:

  • Triple the recipe for a sleepover breakfast.
  • Make 1/3 of the recipe for a single serving — now they need to find 1/3 of 3/4.
  • Keep a tally chart on the fridge tracking how many pancakes the family makes each month. At the end of the month, add them up.
  • Try adding 1/2 cup of blueberries or 1/4 cup of chocolate chips and talk about how the new ingredient fits into the recipe fractions.

  1. Which fraction in the recipe was the hardest to measure? Why?
  2. When we doubled the recipe, some ingredients were easy to double and some were tricky. What made the difference?
  3. If you made this recipe 3 times in one month, how many eggs would you use in total?
  4. You used 3/4 cup of milk for one batch. If you only had a 1/4 cup measure, how many times would you need to fill it to get 3/4 cup?

Every time your child reads a recipe, they are reading fractions in context — not on a worksheet, but on a measuring cup they are holding in their hand.
